A joint initiative of the University of Washington and Washington State University to engage the public in Puget Sound’s recovery
Puget Sound is central to Washington’s heritage, culture and quality of life, contributing billions of dollars to the state economy. The Sound’s key social, environmental and economic importance is tied directly to its wellbeing and the richness and diversity of its natural resources. Unfortunately, many of the Sound’s species and habitats are in serious decline, threatened by runaway growth and development. By 2020, the region’s population is expected to grow almost 40 percent, to more than 5 million residents.
One of the greatest challenges facing Puget Sound is lack of public awareness of its eroding health. According to a state-commissioned public opinion survey, a large majority of the region’s residents believe that the Sound is in good shape.
Increased public awareness is essential to support the personal and public policy actions needed to restore Puget Sound’s health. Sound Future leverages university assets to catalyze public involvement in the restoration and protection of Puget Sound. It will combine successful UW citizen science and WSU volunteer programs to create an integrated network of knowledgeable residents and experts, acting collectively to conserve Puget Sound’s natural resources. Drawing on proven scientific and outreach capabilities, the initiative will establish an expert team to provide training and technical advice and create opportunities for faculty and student participation.
